Outline

This section is concerned with identifying challenges facing agricultural operators, food companies, and agri-food organizations as they exist in society today. The goal is to analyze how these entities are transforming their internal structures in response to changes in the social and economic environment, and find out which direction they are headed.
We mainly focus on the internal structures and decision-making activities of agricultural organizations. We also look into the overall structure of the agri-food system from agricultural operators through food manufacturers and distributors lead to consumers, and how this structure is being transformed, as well as decision-making activities in the system. At the same time, we study conventions, rules, regulations, and policies that are closely related to the structures and the decision-making activities.
In addition, we deal with social challenges that must be addressed by agri-food organizations, such as issues related to adversity of continued existence of farmers and an imbalance in bargaining power among anteroposterior agri-food sectors. Traditional and regional food products and regional food systems face difficulty in maintaining their existence. There are also problems related to the foodloss, as well as issues concerning food quality and safety. We seek to deal with such problems and find a way to create an agri-food system in which a variety of entities can coexist to maintain their food, culture, and values.
For this purpose, we will build our theoretical framework on basic economics of management and holdings. We will delve into cognitive science, which studies information processing capabilities of human beings, as well as economics that emphasize conventions and coordination systems of society, such as the so-called modern institutional economics and convention economics. We will also study economics from the standpoint of morality and ethics.
